2. 1810 census, Pendleton Dist, SC, page 208: "Drury Upshaw" household: 1 female 16-26

6. 1850 census: (not located; research needed in original census of Douglas Co, MO)

7. 1860 census, Douglas Co, MO, family #225: (household of John Sevier Upshaw): Frances Upshaw, age 70, born in North Carolina.

COMMENTS:

1. The will of John Parham, 1804, Elbert Co, GA, names a daughter "Mary Upshaw"; whose husband was Richard Upshaw, as proved by John Parham estate returns. Mary Parham could not have been the wife of Drury Upshaw, as Drury could not have been married much before 1808 and John Parham's will named his daughter "Mary Upshaw" in 1804. Due to the uncertainty of the spelling of the maiden name of Frances, Drury's wife, which is thought to be Parnue, Parmele, or Parmely, there is some similarity with "Parnue", which is cause to mention this here until Drury's wife can be positively identified.

2. Frances (Parnue?) Upshaw was reinterred at Denlow cemetery, Douglas Co, MO.

COMMENTS:

1. Catherine was 12 years younger than Leroy Upshaw and may have been his second wife. Also, note that Catherine's birthplace is given as "SC" in 1850, but as "GA" in 1860.

2. Question: was the "Ann Herring", age 30, in the 1860 census related to Martha Herring, wife of Adkin Upshaw, md 1824 Morgan Co, GA?

MISCELLANEOUS:

1. (1999) from Kathy Stewart <kis@hom.net>: "Pension papers of James Upshaw (Union Civil War), states that James Upshaw of Co. E, 15th Indiana volunteer infantry, of Posey Co., Ind., born in Dade Co., Ga., was married twice, both deceased by 1897 at time of answering pension questionaire. The first wife's maiden name was Forrester. The only marriages I have, to date, are to Elizabeth Autlew and (2) Matilda Edwards. These I verified in Evansville, Ind., while visiting this summer. I believed the first wife to be my lineage, as a child was born just prior to Matilda showing up some three months after the baby was born in Dec. (what year, where?). So I presumed that Elizabeth died during child birth. Matilda then married James and raised my 4th Great grandfather, Andrew, who was born in 1858; later the two having a son of their own named Walter J. Upshaw, born 1872. James pension papers states that his first wife was a Forrester and that her descent was Creek Indian(!). James apparently married his third wife Susan Stone, widow of Thomas Stone, in 1908. She received his pension after 1913 when he died (where?).
James Upshaw also lived in Griffin, Ind., Nashville, TN, and Scott Co., MO - the latter is where he died, burial site unknown. (Note: I replied to her via email on 9 Sep 1999, attaching my Family Group Sheet). She adds that James Upshaw died in 1913, Illmo, Scott Co, MO. (cemetery records need to be checked)

402. Catherine Upshaw

PRIMARY SOURCES:

1. 1840 census, Dade Co, GA, page 80 (household of Peter Upshaw):
1 female under 5

Peter Upshaw Wife

- PRIMARY SOURCES -

1. 1810 census, Pendleton Dist, SC, page 208 (household of Peter Upshaw):
1 female 16-26.

2. Apparently she had no issue, as the 1830 Monroe Co, TN, census shows
no children born before 1815.

187. Amelia ("Permelia") Upshaw

1. 1823, 25 Dec; Carter Co, TN, marriage record to Andrew Bradley.

2. 1830 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 145 (household of Andrew Bradley): 1 female 20-29.

3. 1840 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 149 (household of Parmilia Bradley): (living adjacent to James Gray, second husband of her mother Milly (Scott) Upshaw; note that Milly was living with Permelia in 1850, 1860, & 1870 censuses after she was widowed from James Gray between 1840-1850): 3 males under 5 (Robert, Westley, ?); 1 female 15-19 (Polly Ann); 1 male 5-9 (Joseph); 1
female 30-39 (Permelia); 1 male 10-14 (Henry, John?).

4. 1850 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 109, dwelling #1526: Permelia Bradley, 42, b Tenn; Henry
Bradley, 23, b Tenn; Polly Bradley, 25, b Tenn; John Bradley, 21, b Tenn; Joseph Bradley, 16, b
Tenn; Kimbro Bradley, 13, b Tenn; Westley Bradley, 12, b Tenn; Milly Gray, 55, b VA. (is this Permelia's mother, Milly (Scott) Upshaw Gray?); Becca Morgan, 26, b Tenn (may not be a child of Permelia's).

5. 1852, 16 June: Monroe Co, TN, marriage record: Amelia Bradley & Jesse Rhea

6. 1859, Aug: Monroe County Court, page 108: Permilia (Amelia) Rhea, widow of Jesse Rhea, who died July 1859, dissents to will and requests dower.

7. 1860 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 323, dwelling #1927: Permelia Ray, 53, b VA.; Wiley(sic)
Gray, 80, M(ale)(sic), b VA.; (Was this Milly (Scott) Upshaw Gray, Permelia's mother?)

8. 1870 census, Monroe Co, TN, dist 14, page 131, dwelling #69: Amelia Ray, 50, b TN.; Jos.
Bradley, 30, b TN.; Louisa Veal, 30, b TN.; John Donley, 10, b TN.; Millie Gray, 110, b TN.(Was
this Milly (Scott) Upshaw Gray, Permelia's mother?).
(Note: this census report was obviously given to the census taker by John Donley, the ten year old, whose relationship to Amelia is unknown at this time; notice the "Polly Ann Donley" in the 1850 household of Jesse Rhea, Monroe Co, TN). All the ages are in ten year "round" numbers: Amelia was not 50, but 63; Jos. Bradley was not 30, but 36; Millie (Scott) Upshaw Gray was not 110, but about 90 (which might seem like 110 to a ten year old), and was not born in Tennessee in 1760! Louisa Veal was probably a visiting neighbor from two dwellings (#67) away: household of Frank Veal, 65, Nancy Veal, 60, and family.

9. 1880 census (soundex), Monroe Co, TN: Permelia Ray not found; need to search 1880 census for Permelia (Amelia) Rhea/Ray.
Byron Sistler, et al, "Index to the 1880 Census of East Tennessee" (Nashville, TN: Byron Sistler & Associates, 1997): No Amelia/Permelia Ray/Rhea, etc.

Andrew Bradley

PRIMARY SOURCES:

1. 1823, 25 Dec, Carter Co, TN, marriage record to Amelia Upshaw.

2. 1830 census, Monroe Co, TN, p. 145: "Andrew Bradley"
(enumerated 16 dwellings away from James Gray, believed to be the second
husband of Milly (Scott) Upshaw, Amelia's mother)
2 males under 5 (Henry & John) 1 female 5-9 (Polly Ann)
1 male 20-29 (Andrew) 1 female 20-29 (Amelia)

COMMENTS:

1. One of their first two listed female children, Rebecca and Polly Ann, is
evidently in error, as they are shown in the 1830 & 1840 census with only one female child. Probably Rebecca ("Becca") Morgan, b 1824, is not her child - this Becca is listed in this household in 1850.

403. Rebecca ("Becca") Bradley

1. 1850 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 218, dwelling #1526: Becca Morgan, age 26.

COMMENTS:

1. Rebecca ("Becca") Bradley may not have been a child of Andrew & Amelia (Upshaw) Bradley, who are only shown with one female child in the 1830 & 1840 censuses, although Becca is shown in their household in 1850.

2. The only marriage record for a "Rebecca Morgan" is in 1844 to William Lankford; there is no marriage record for a Rebecca Bradley in Monroe Co (Note: check for a Rebecca ______ who
married a _______ Morgan prior to 1850).

Morgan

- NOTES -

1. It is not certain that the "Becca Morgan", age 26, who was in the
household of Permelia Bradley in 1850 was her daughter; was Becca's
Morgan husband dead at this time?

Bradly, 3, b TN (probably his son); William Shaw, 24, b TN; (relationship of William Shaw not known). Apparently, his wife, the former Margaret Martin (m 1856) was dec'd in 1860; neither is she listed with Joseph in the 1870 census (see note 5).

5. 1870 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 131, dwelling #69 (Tellico Plains): (enumerated in household of his mother, Amelia Ray): Jos. Bradly, 30(sic), b TN.

6. 1880 census, Monroe Co, TN: need to search for Joseph Bradley.

Margaret E. Martin

- PRIMARY SOURCES -

1. 1856, 3 May, Monroe Co, TN, marriage record to Joseph Bradley.

- NOTES -

(in household of Permelia Ray): Joseph Bradly(sic), 27, b TN;
James N. Bradly, 3, b TN )probably his son); William Shaw, 24, b TN
(relationship of William Shaw not known). Apparently his wife, the
former Margaret E. Martin, was dec'd in 1860; neither is she listed
with Joseph in the 1870 census.

1. 1840 census, Monroe Co, TN, page 149; household of Permelia Bradley: 1 male under 5

4. 1870 Tennessee census index: not found.

COMMENTS:

1. Robert Kimbro Bradley never married; no marriage record found in Monroe Co. through 1870; did he marry in Hamilton Co, IL?
